Wii’re Still Competing!

Although the Wii console sales have been rapidly declining and critics are saying that the Wii is on its last legs especially now the Nintendo Wii U is on its way next year, There was still a massive sale of the console during last weeks Black Friday period, where the Wii had its best Black Friday ever. The release of some brilliant new games such as Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land helped a lot to drive sales but also the unbeatable price of the Wii boosted them enormously. President Reggie Fils-Aime said

For our Wii business, this is the first time that we’re at or below a $149 price point in the marketplace. Certainly Wal-Mart had a very strong Black Friday. They sold a Wii console with no software for $99. And overall, our value equation for both Wii and 3DS is very compelling. It’s a tough time and consumers are looking for value.

So the Nintendo Wii is still going strong and is as ever a very popular Christmas gift! Make sure to check our Wii Deals page if you want to compare the best Wii bundles and offers that are currently available!

Nintendo Wii U

June 15th 2011 by tom

Wii U A New Way To Play
The President of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime introduced Nintendo’s brand new console the “Wii U” at E3 on tuesday the 7th of June. Nintendo took to the stage and kicked off with a tribute to the legend of Zelda games for its 25th anniversary, with a live orchestra playing classic music from the game. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata continued to tease about the new console and first showed us some great titles coming out for the Nintendo 3DS including Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D, Starfox, Zelda Remake and many more. Reggie Finally took to the stage and announced the Wii’s successor as the “Wii U”, another quirky name.

What Reggie revealed

Well we didn’t actually get to see the console itself apart from in the background, Reggie himself explained it as
“Its just a box with hardware in, who wants to see that.” The main focus instead was on the bewildering controller but what we know of the console so far is:
Wii U Console

  • Introduces Nintendo to Full 1080p HD Capabilities
  • Disc Based system 25GB capacity single sided discs (not blue-ray (apparently))
  • 32nm quad-core IBM Power CPU
  • AMD/ATI R700 series GPU
  • 8GB Onboard Internal Flash storage, with ability to expand with USB memory sticks/hard drives
  • Backwards compatibility with Wii games, controllers and accessories
  • Wii U Touchscreen Controller

The Wii U controller is the offspring of a controller and a tablet pc and here it is

    Wii U Controller

It has a bright 6.2 inch touchscreen in the middle, Two Nub Dual-analogue control sticks, front and rear facing cameras, Gyroscope, Accelerometer. it has plenty of unique functions such as when that selfish family member wishes to watch television while your playing on your brand new Wii u, you are able to continue playing on the controller’s screen itself. Nintendo have taken a big risk in trying to change the world of controllers as they have rarely changed over the last generations of consoles, maybe in shape and button count. The Screen on the Wii U controller Will provide a player with duel screen capabilities with it perhaps displaying important information, maps and inventories much like the nintendo Ds second screen displays. Some of the games that have been confirmed on the Wii U include: Super Smash Bros, Assassin’s Creed, Killer Freaks from Outer Space and Pikmin *

How much will the Wii U Cost?

There has been official price released yet with prices ranging from £170-£350. The controller itself seems to be worth more than the actual console unit with some reports saying that nintendo wont actually be selling the controller unit by itself. This would mean that there would only be one controller per console unit and nintendo have confirmed this to be the case meaning Multiplayer would require one person on the new controller and other players to use the old wii controllers. As for release, all we know so far is that it will be available in 2012, We will keep you updated as best we can here at whichconsole.co.uk.

Mario Wii Price Cut

Nintendo have announced that they are dropping the price of The Wii Console. Nintendo are trying to move stock ahead of the E3 unveiling of the Wii 2 in June next month and its release in 2012.

UK Retail prices are to drop by £50 next week and perhaps even more. The bundle pack with Wii Sports Resort and Mario Kart is estimated to cost around £130 and some retailers to offer £99 deal!

Nintendo Wii 2

Nintendo Wii 2 Coming 2012

nintedo wii 2
Nintendo has announced its plan to launch a brand new Wii although not before April 2012 says Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata. Codenamed Project Cafe and planned to be unveiled in a playable form at this year’s E3 in LA this June. Nintendo is always keen to provide gamers with innovative technology to engage gamers and the original Wii is a fine example. There has been no official release of specs yet but some exciting rumours and speculation of what the Wii Successor may include such as:

Visuals more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3?
Hardware more powerful than that of the xbox 360 and PS3 Could mean stunning HD visuals, Blu-ray capabilities and a build in projection unit that means the console will not require a tv to play just a white wall perhaps.

Motion Controller with touch screen?
According to a number of sources the new controllers will feature a six-inch touch screen display potentially capable of 720p HD visuals, also to have 8 buttons, twin analogue sticks and a camera. Sounds expensive and estimated to market at $80 or above each!

Backwards Compatability
The console is very likely to be backwards-compatible enabling the current Wii and its motion-sensing peripherals to be used and to continue competing with Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move. A very appealing next generation console but remember these are only rumours.

Here at whichconsole.co.uk we are very excited to see the console in action at E3 and will be prepared on release to bring you the best deals.

With the Playstation Move and Xbox 360 Kinect set to give the Wii a run for its money this Christmas, it worth remembering that Nintendo were first to launch this kind of technology, and with an impressive list of new and improved games set to hit the shops soon, the sales should speak for themselves.

Nintendo is set to release a good mix of old favourites and new titles in time for the festive season. The much anticipated arrival of Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii is due to hit the shelves on December  1st.  Nintendo DS will also be rolling out some must have titles including Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Souls and Professor Layton and the Lost Future. Should you buy the Xbox Kinect or Wii

October 17th 2010 by Steve

Since the recent release of Microsoft’s Kinect, there has been great debate amongst gamers as to whether the Xbox Kinect or the Nintendo Wii takes the crown as the better motion control system.  Both set out to achieve the same ultimate gaming experience but go about it in a completely technological way.

With the holiday season just around the corner it’s time to make up your mind as to which console will make it on to your Christmas wish list. To make that decision a little easier read on to find out the pros and cons for both the Kinect and the Nintendo Wii.

Reasons to buy a Kinect instead of a Nintendo Wii:

  • Completely hands free, the hyper-advanced technology is able to tell not just your position but the depth you’re taking up in a 3D space. Essentially, you move and the game moves in the exact same way.
  • Great value for money  – RRP £130
  • Superior graphics to that of the Nintendo Wii due to the increased processing power behind the Xbox 360.
  • Better online interface that the Nintendo Wii
  • No attachments requires for any of the exercise games
  • Only compatible with the Xbox 360, making it an expensive purchase if you don’t already own one.
  • Quality of multiplayer control may be impeded due to the lack of controllers.
  • The Nintendo Wii has four years of production history behind it already, therefore a head start on producing new software for the system.

Problems With The Microsoft Kinect

  • Only compatible with the Xbox 360, making it an expensive purchase if you don’t already own one.
  • Quality of multiplayer control may be impeded due to the lack of controllers.
  • The Nintendo Wii has four years of production history behind it already, therefore a head start on producing new software for the system.

Reasons To Buy A Wii Instead Of A Kinect

However, the Nintendo Wii has continued its reign as the best selling games console since its release back in 2006 so it’s got to be doing something right!

  • Requires no additional purchases to make it work
  • An impressive games library, with a little something for just about everyone – from the classic Super Mario Cart to the ever popular Wii Fit
  • Super responsive controls
  • An abundance of Nintendo character favourites like Mario, Kirby and Link that will prove attractive to young and old gamers alike.

But of course, nothing is perfect…

Problems With The Nintendo Wii

  • Multi player function can only be played by purchasing additional controllers
  • The Xbox has always out done the Wii in the graphics department
  • Online performance is very poor compared to that of the Xbox
  • Although well loved by families, the Wii hasn’t been received as openly within the hard core gaming community.

So whats it going to be??  Don’t forget to register for the whichconsole newsletter or follow us on facebook to keep up to date with all the latest amazing deals.
