Console Subscription Plans?

May 12th 2012 by tom

Microsoft unveiled a subscription XBOX 360 this week, where instead of a single payment, monthly instalments would be paid for your hardware and services much like a phone contract.

The actual Microsoft subscription was a 4GB Xbox 360 kinect bundle that would be contracted for 2 years where you would have to pay a small fee up front, $99 in this case, and then a reoccurring payment of $14.99 every month for the next two years. Bringing it to a grand total of $458 for a 4GB Console with Kinect and two years worth of XBL Gold subscription.

The cost is roughly the same as buying a 4GB XBOX 360 console and Kinect separately so its a good deal as the initial forking out of a large sum of money can be a large deterrent for many consumers. So customers benefit but so do Microsoft who make a big more money out of letting you pay over a period of time.

This is currently only available in America as a “trial” run to see if the scheme will be popular. Personally I believe that if the next generation console were released with a similar marketing strategy it would do wonders for the console market. If it men’t I was paying, say £50 extra over a 2 year period then I would definitely prefer it over spending £300 on the XBOX 720 or PS4 and going hungry for a month.

However the 2 year contract for a XBOX 360 seems a little risky when there is so much rumour surround the XBOX 720, but perhaps they were not lying when Microsoft said that they were not working on the next console.

Console sales have rapidly been declining of the last few years and many critics believe that the Home video games console market is pretty much dead, though many people like to play video games on there big screens at home the evolution of alternative means to do so is having a major impact on the market.

Would you think about taking a contract for a console and the use of its services? let us know!

What to expect at E3 2012

May 10th 2012 by tom

Well E3 on June 5th 7th is fast approaching and there is always a exciting buzz in the air on surround speculation of new games and console releases and this year is to be no different. So what can we expect from the high rollers?

Nintendo

Nintendo are expected to really run the show with them officially being the only company to have a new Console to show off this year. The Nintendo Wii U bundles together a HD Console with a tablet styled controller. We are not quite sure what to expect from the Wii U yet, it was announced at last year’s E3 but had very little support or software so we are still unsure of just what it can do.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Myamoto unveiled that a new Pikmin game will be shown at E3 and a new Super Mario. Keen not to make a similar mistake to when the 3ds was launched of not having enough games on the platform Nintendo seem to be aiming both games for the release of the Nintendo Wii U at the end of the year. Apparently the Pikmin 3 game was held back because Miyamoto think it would work particularly well in HD.

It is unusual for Nintendo to announce what they will be showing at E3 so hopefully we can expect some big surprises from them in June!

Microsoft

Microsoft have come out and smashed rumours about a next generation console at E3 from themselves. So what have they got in there sack of goodies? Well speculation suggests that they may reveal a new cross-platform music service that will replace its Zune software, currently code-named “Woodstock.”

Reportedly the service will be playable from a browser to a number of platforms including: windows 8, android, IOs and XBOX Consoles. With no need for browser plugins and could include a facebook integration perhaps similar to that of Spotify.

The centre piece of Microsoft’s E3 conference though is going to be master chief. Halo 4 on XBOX 360 is going to be as big as ever and as one of the most popular gaming franchises on XBOX 360 we can all look forward to plenty of Halo game play trailers and reveals!

Microsoft is also set to be the first company to take the
stage at E3 this year!

Sony

So Whilst Microsoft set the bar on the opening day, Sony plan to go out with a bang on the last day. Sony have also crushed the rumours of a Playstation 4 being announced this year and have insisted that their main focus is currently on driving the vita forward and getting more platform exclusives out for the PS3 and PS Vita, such as The Last of Us from Naughty Dog, creators of the uncharted series. As well as this week’s big announcement, God of War: Ascension, there is going to be plenty to talk about and play at the Sony booths!

To round up, Expect lots of games and software updates but the only major hardware update is coming from Nintendo with the Wii U. Xbox 360, PS Vita and PS3 will be getting a hammering of new titles and it’s definitely going to be as exciting as ever! Oh an in case you’re wondering… Valve probably won’t even show up.

Futuristic Call of Duty?

April 26th 2012 by tom

The game Call of duty game is believed to be “Black Ops 2″ and it has been suggested that it may well be set in the near future. The official Call of duty Website posted a video link of a FPS Russia video which shows off a futuristic flying RC Drone weapon which was teased for inclusion in the next Call of Duty.

The Next instalment is going to be revealed on the 1st of May at the Basketball Playoffs on TNT, so it is probably going to be one of the most watched basketball matches ever.

A post by the unofficial Modern Warfare 3 twitter account showed off some apparent box art for the next game, which suggested that the release date was on the 13th of November. The box art might just be some fan made art as many people have claimed that its on a standard dvd case, the font is not the same and the lens flare conveniently blocks out the characters face.
But the release date does look like it could be right as the last Call of Duty and black ops were released on the exact same day.

This time it will be available on PS3, XBOX 360, Pc and a special PS Vita version has also been announced. Excited about a new CoD? Or had enough of the franchise? let us know!

Halo 4 Coming in November

April 20th 2012 by tom

It was announced on Tuesday that the seventh edition of Halo, Halo 4, will be coming out this year on November the 6th. The story once again following the popular sci-fi hero Master Chief, set four years after the events of Halo 3.

Halo 4 is the first in the series to not be created by Bunjie Studios after the developers broke of from microsoft in 2007. Instead it has been handed over to 343 industries to develop, creative director Josh Holmes said.

One of the things we wanted to do was put Chief up against new challenges and have him face obstacles unlike anything he’s faced before — some of those are external and some of those are internal

There is a great deal to expect from halo 4 and with a new studio taking a different approach on things its definitely worth getting excited about! Halo 4 is intended to be the beginning of a new trilogy based on the story of Master Chief and is going to be a long one.

343 industries said they want to make the game to have a faster pace and feel refreshing, but to also have a familiar feel to it. So get ready for that big day on November 6th! Remember Halo is only available on the XBOX console so keep an eye out for some Halo 4 Xbox 360 Bundles on our deals page!

Are you excited about Halo 4? Or do you think it will be the same as the other ones? let us know you thoughts!

PS4 Codename “Orbis”

March 30th 2012 by tom

According to source “Kotaku” The PS4, codenamed Orbis will hit our stores at Christmas 2013? This apparently was revealed by a reliable source to Kotaku who’s apparently shared correct information in the past. They also shared the hardware specs – an AMD Southern Islands Graphics Chip that will allow for 1080p 3D games and regular games to be played in a resolution of 4096 x 2160? 2160p seems slightly extreme!
Its not unexpected that a few select developers are getting the development kits already, naughty dog most likely.

There was however some bad news to follow this juicy rumour, the next generation console is said to not be backwards compatible with Playstation 3 games?! This is a major sucker punch for anybody with a large collection of PS3 games. Why would they do this? Well, the main reason being Sony can put the PS3 titles up on the playstation network for you to buy again to get on your “Orbis” and make a lot of money. It was also hinted that the games will be available in download form or as Blu-ray Discs, but when you play a disc for the first time it will lock itself into that single PSN account and require authenticating before you can play. Very frustrating when a friend or family members wants to borrow that game, this is supposedly a move to target the used games market.

Remember that these are just rumours however as anonymous sources are more often than not, not real sources. But these do sound like the Sony way, increasing power and output and at the same time frustrating thousands of potential customers?

One thing backing up this story and the name “Orbis” is that if you visit orbis.scedev.net it redirects you to the sony developers network website!? Although there is nothing relating to the orbis replacing the orbis with vita takes you to the same page.

Let us know how you feel about the “orbis” and how things for the ps4 are shaping up?

Nintendo 3DS – A Year On

March 29th 2012 by tom

After the unbelievable success of the Nintendo DS, The 3DS was going to have a tough time to live up to its expectations. The original DS has sold a massive 13m units in the UK since its release in 2004.

Then on March the 25th last year, Nintendo released their 3DS. The 3DS got off to a shaky start when console sales figures fell far short of predictions. Slated for its lack of games at release the Nintendo began to turn things around with a steady increase of sales and has come a long way since its release.

After launch, the 3DS was labelled a “headache machine” by the Sun and was unjustly criticised. The high cost at release did not help in sales either costing around £230! When the 3DS did drop its price however Console sales were boosted incredibly and the 3DS Stormed into 2012 with millions of units of sales under its belt.

Also helped a long the way with an impressive line up of games including Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 already released and Luigi’s Mansions 2 and Mario Tennis on the way the its going to potentially face even more success in the future. Check out our 3DS deals page for the latest Nintendo 3DS Bundle.

The Steam Box

March 23rd 2012 by tom

Gaming giant Valve may well be getting involved in the console side of gaming. The creators of some of the most iconic games including Half Life, Portal and Counter Strike are reportedly working on a piece of hardware that may well be announced this year.
Steam Box Concept
It is presumed that the “Steam box” as its been called will integrate with the Steam distribution programme that is available on PC’s. Steam would create a store that the current competitors, Xbox and PS3 would have trouble keeping up with. The steam client for PCs is the most used digital store front and is widely acknowledged.

Valve filed a patent last year for a proprietary controller that would let you swap out components depending on what game you were playing. Valve also admitted to working a lot with biometrics in games and Gabe Newell did confirm that the company was looking into the hardware space quoted saying “Well, if we have to sell hardware we will.”

Verge, where the story originated from said that the device will make use of steams “big picture” mode what was shown off at last year’s GDC and will allow users to enjoy steam on there TV Sets. Sounds like a console to me! It was also said that the valve were not trying to compete with the current gaming consoles but instead its real competition was with apple.

Just a Rumour

With no confirmation this is still just a rumour. But valve has been very quiet over the last few years with regards to ground breaking technology or games, apart from portal 2 perhaps. But E3 this year is a perfect platform for valve to make a big announcement. We will keep you updated on any rumours in the future!

In other News the rumours surrounding Xbox 720 and PS4 being released this year or at least being shown at June E3 has been smashed into the ground by both companies respectively and have said the current generation of consoles still have some juice left in the tank.

SSX Released Today

March 2nd 2012 by tom

Today, EA releases its much anticipated SSX on PS3 and XBOX 360, the latest in a 12 year old series of the snowboarding video games. The game has been totally refined and the HD graphics are quite breath taking and poses the question if we have yet got the most out of our current gen consoles.

The new SSX is set across nine mountains where each mountain has different challenges to be completed before moving onto the next mountain. With three types of level including races, tricks and survive it sticks to its roots and provides endless re-playability and fun. The story follows a group of nine boarders, some old school faces and some new characters to. as you tackle each mountain you work your way to the final challenge where you need to purchase special equipment to help overcome some of the problem whether it be a wing-suit to sky dive or a headlamp for tunnels and caves.

The game is incredibly fun but the lack of multiplayer is a major flaw, the current interaction between players is leaderboards and to chases your friends ghosts in an attempt to beat there best run.

You can pick up SSX for £37.47 from Amazon.co.uk on both XBOX 360 and PS3.
if you haven’t got yourself a console that can play the game but are desperate for some crazy SSX fun then gamestation have solved your problem!

Tell us what you think of SSX, does it keep to its roots? Or are the changes to significant from the old school “what the?!” to vast to be another in the series?
