Xbox 360 and Xbox live will be massive

September 14th 2010 by Steve

Fresh from the Kinect showcase at Gamescon 2010, Microsoft spokesman Chris Lewis, has stated the launch of the controller-free gaming experience is an extremely important venture for the xBox 360.

Based around a camera-style peripheral for the Microsoft xBox 360, it enables the user to interact and control the xBox 360 without the need for a controller. It uses spoken commands, gestures and presented objects or images and aims to compete directly with Wii and Wii MotionPlus, strengthening and widening Micrsoft’s traditional user base.

“This is a crucial time in expansion for Xbox 360, in terms of new audiences, new markets for Xbox Live and multiple platforms,” said Lewis.

Microsoft believes the developments of the “Kinect” will strengthen their position in the market ahead of the competition for the foreseeable future. With the development of several new games for the new format, including Child of Eden, and Dance Central, added to the already impressive collection that Microsoft already have and continue to develop, Lewis is optimistic that they posses the winning formula: “When you look at what we are bringing to the market this year, with the magic of Kinect, alongside our blockbuster line-up of games, including the biggest game for 2010, Halo: Reach, we’re confident that Xbox 360 has something for all the family and will be the gaming and entertainment console of 2010 and beyond,” he concluded.

Microsoft has informed us that a dedicated group inside of Microsoft Game Studios will develop video games for Windows phones, which will help outside game publishers and independent game makers. The new move is described as an attempt to capitalize on the success of the Xbox 360 as Microsoft tries to compete with Apple’s iPhone.

The new game features in Windows Phone 7 will allow the users to check out new games, keep track of scores, send messages to fellow players and interact with their animated game, World Avatar, a cartoon character customized to look like the user. Microsoft is also hoping that Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 devices might get a boost from the upcoming launch of Kinect, a motion-sensing game controller for the Xbox 360. Windows Phone 7 will have games like Halo Waypoint, Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst and Guitar Hero 5

Sales within the video-game industry are expected to rise significantly in the final quarter of 2010, when both Microsoft and Sony are expected to release motion-sensing add-on products to their respective consoles.

Microsoft’s Kinect, which is scheduled for release in early November in the US, is the more highly-anticipated of the two devices. It contains a camera and both audio motion-sensing technology to track movement from the human body. Both the  Wii and upcoming PS3 systems require users to hold a device for the respective systems to read.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 topped console sales in July for the first time in nearly three years, as the video-game industry as a whole saw sales slip 1%, a market research firm said.

Microsoft’s introduction of a thinner Xbox 360 drove sales to 443,500 units in July, easily accounting for the Nintendo Wii and, also, Sony’s PlayStation 3, The NPD Group said in releasing its monthly report late Thursday. The last time the Xbox 360 held the top slot was in late 2007, when sales were driven by the launch of “Halo 3,”.

Sales of video-game hardware as a whole, which includes the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS portable, rose 12% from the same month a year ago. Besides the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 also saw a “significant” increase in sales compared to 12 months previous.

Industry sales, including hardware, software and accessories, dipped 1% from a year. Not included in the industry number are PC games, which saw a 103% increase in dollars from a year ago, mainly due to the success of a single game, “Starcraft II.”

Earlier in the year, Blizzard Entertainment released the game and sold 721,000 units of “Starcraft II”  in the month.

Game bundles, pricing reductions and the much-anticipated release of it’s new Microsoft xBox Slim, have all been given as possible reasons behind the major increase in total sales this week. Microsoft xBox boss Chris Lewis has stated that sales have been increased by more than 10 times in total, compared with the previous week’s figures.

As with all games in the Red Faction Universe, players can destroy anything that gets in there way, from army enclosures, to other players vehicles using a variety of methods and artillery!

Developed by THQ Digital Studios UK and executive produced by Volition, Inc., Red Faction: Battlegrounds pits four players either locally or online in a variety of game modes, including Survival, Annihilate and Flag Frenzy.
